  • The index did pull-back today, at least a little bit, but I didn't get in. Now that it has pulled-back about half a percent, I don't know where it's going to go tomorrow. I'm more inclined to get in after it exceeds it's previous high ...or, alternatively, wait for a more significant pull-back before going long in the index via the XIU ETF. In any case, it's wait and see for now.

  • I almost got into a TSX bear position minutes before the close on Friday after I realized what was happening with the index... it's been heading up, pretty well consistently, even on a day like Friday where employment numbers were announced way, way below expectations. I believe the index is primed for a pull-back and I wouldn't be surprised if it comes tomorrow.

  • It all happened so fast, but in the intervening minutes I set a target of 17.40 or better and watched as it just made it over that mark so I bailed on the remaining 45 shares of my buy order and sold-off the 200 shares. 1.63% in less than 5-minutes!

Update: it's now about 45 minutes later and I most definitely left a lot of dough on the table. The price of Oil just kept falling and HOD is skyrocketing. No regrets, of course, I still suspect that Oil will rally again before the day, and week, is out.

Update #2: Put in a standing order to get back in again with these swings, but as of 2:30 it doesn't look it's going to bounce up again, high enough, for me to get in... and I certainly don't want to be in this stock/ETF over the weekend!

  • The price of Oil only momentarily spiked and just touched high enough for my order to be executed... but only partially! It had fallen back down again so quickly that I hadn't even realized until I thought to check on my order status. I had placed the order, originally, for 245 shares and it filled 200 of them :)

  • My instincts proved correct today and I got my pull-back after the morning surge on Oil. Of course, I can't help but look how much money was left on the table and... so far, it seems like I sold pretty well. It's holding steady, again, just a bit lower than where I sold it. It will be interesting to watch what happens for the remainder of the day.

I'm proud of myself for entering-in the stop-loss. It was difficult to do, but I did it anyway!

  • The swings! Geez... Oil rallied back-up and I finally got my price on HOD (Oil Bear). Oil may, of course, keep going, but I just don't see this sort of rally lasting. As I write this Oil is a few cents higher, but this is definitely looking to be a resistance level for the time being. ...of course, time being, in today's market, is a very relative/brief thing.

Now... I need to put in a stop-loss order to prove to myself that I can be a disciplined investor. HOD is down 9% at the time of my purchase (Oil has rallied about 4.5%). If Oil rallies another percentage point, then that would mean another 2% down on HOD ...a price of $17.40. I have to choose a point and that's a point that I both don't see happening and, if it does, it's probably not a good thing for me.

As for my target sell price... I'm going to look for $18.10 or higher. Based on today's chart that should be quite realistic on a swing and would be a great trade.

Interesting lesson: if you have a stop-loss order placed, TD's system won't let you also place a limit sell order. I guess their thinking is that you only place the stop-loss if you fear a swing against you and would otherwise hold out for your target price above your purchase price.

  • I watched as Oil very nearly broke back through a new high, but it came within $0.06 of my target price on HOD and then Oil pulled back again and HOD rallied without me. Just like with what seems to be my missed opportunity in Gold this morning, I'm not done watching and do still have my order pending at $17.75, but it would require Oil to rally over $38 again. We'll see.

I don't regret my greedy target price... it just sucks to see a missed swing.

  • I really thought that I was going to get my target price and buy ...I thought I had missed my window when the price of Gold started to climb again after the first more significant pull-back of the morning, but when I checked the price of XGD (the ETF), it had not actually responded to the bounce of Gold at all. Even though Gold had bounced, the ETF was holding at the lower level. There were, literally, moments where the price of Gold was appreciating and the ETF was heading down!?

Then the bounce continued and it was looking less and less likely that I was going to get a chance to take part. I'm not done watching today, but it seems to be rallying back up now.

  • The first hour of trading has been a pretty steep slide for both Oil and Gold this morning, but I think that they have farther to go. I don't know if my opportunity will present itself today, but I feel as though the market needs to sort itself out before I loan it any of my money again.

I've sent email alerts for both commodity ETFs and will keep my seat in the bleachers for now.

  • Some big swings in Gold today, so far. I was so focused on the new highs for Oil that I completely missed the intraday dip in Gold. My target for Gold was below $1,260, which it never quite met, so I don't think that I would have gotten in anyway, but still.

I've said this before, but the disconnect between the Gold ETFs and the underlying bullion is really confusing sometimes. There was a move up in XGD this morning that was completely unrelated to Gold, which has been down all day long...???
