  • Well, it would seem that I made the right decision to stay out of the Oil (bear) position on Friday at market close since Oil appears to be edging higher this morning, it's up another 2% already. I'll keep an eye out for an opportunity if it gains significantly, but for now I'll keep my seat in the bleachers and wait and see. HOD is down 3% 20-minutes into trading from Friday's close.

A week ago I probably would have been tempted to bid on a pull-back already, but I don't trust Oil to retreat just yet. The market seems to be really confused as to its direction over the short term and, ironically, I feel more confident placing a bet for/long on Oil after it retreats a bit, then counting on the retreat itself. We'll see if I get my opportunity.

  • I'm very tempted to place a bet against Oil now that it's reached over $36 (Crude), but two things weigh on me:

    1. It's Friday before the close and I'm exhausted... I don't know if I want to be in over the weekend, and
    2. I just had a bet against Oil yesterday that paid off... and today it's at new highs... another rollercoaster anyone?

  • Of course, as I write this I'm looking at the current bid/ask and I can see that I didn't quite sell at the best time, but I'm out and I'm grateful to have fresh profits for the day. Per my earlier posts today, it was quite a ride. From the lowest of the day to right now, it was almost a 12% swing in the total value of my portfolio! These leveraged ETFs are definitely exciting... though maybe too exciting!?

Something that I noticed, again, was the disconnect between the bullion and the ETF. I was watching the spot price of Gold for my target price at which to act, but when I revisited the ETF price in TD's WebBroker software, it was still rising while the Gold Spot was stagnant at the time... it's puzzling and definitely frustrating at moments like that.

  • There was a partial correction and I sold off the portion that I had bought on margin. I knew that I didn't want to be in margin come end of trading anyway, so I took at least some of those profits to offset the larger losses that I was still carrying (so far, at least).

I'm actually quite proud of this trade. I set my target price ($4.82) and stuck with it.

  • I doubled-down again. The moves, one day after another, are just too big and there's going to be a pull-back. As the title states: I may be an idiot, but... I have to believe something if I'm going to be trading like this and I believe that there's going to be a pull-back. As I'm writing this trade post it's holding steady at about this price, but we'll see what the afternoon holds.

When the market opened my intention was to submit a stop-loss order, really, honestly, it was... but the price just kept on dropping as I refreshed prior to submitting it and I could barely keep up with the fall. I then realized that I had probably already lost as much as I was going to lose and might as well see what happens. It did fall some more after that, but... at least for now... it's holding at about where I bought... this time around.

It's Friday, of course, and I find myself into my margin account again.

  • With my bet against Gold in late day trading yesterday I was anxious to find out how it would play out come morning. I checked in on the futures market in the evening and things appeared to be going my way with Gold falling with the pull back that I had anticipated. Well, when I woke this morning I came to learn that since about 3am the after markets were actively bidding-up Gold to new all time highs... and I was very, very deeply out of the money.

Everything that I had worked so hard to build-up in my profits from the two weeks prior was about to be wiped-out with the opening of he markets. I felt like an ass... especially since I was already patting myself on my back for such a brilliant move.

I've been watching since about 6am this morning and what a ride. As I write this I am now marginally in the money (I think), but I'm terribly nervous about what the opening price will be.

I'm not quite sure what my lesson learned from this is yet, but I'm sure that there is one and will be posting one as soon as it strikes me!

I've been watching the bid/ask on HGD while observing the futures price and I know that the pre-market bid/ask prices can be substantially off from what they will be at open, but I'm also forced to remind myself about the disconnect between the ETF and the underlying asset. Even though the futures price has come down as the morning rolled on, the bid/ask is still suggesting a significant hit to my bottom line. I guess it will be another expensive lesson day :/

  • Well, I followed my latest Lesson Learned from earlier this morning and I was greedy with my buy price for this Bear ETF and bought at just shy of the day's low (so far - with 40 minutes left in trading). Gold hit a new 52-week high today and this ETF suffered a loss of over 7% (so far) due to its leveraged short positions.

As I'm writing this trade post Gold had continued to climb and my position is now in the red, but I have to think that there's going to be a pull back tomorrow or after the weekend. Time will tell!

...and in all my excitement to get in on this ...again... I forgot to enter a stop-loss order.

  • I already got out of my gold position this morning, but I've been watching the ETF this afternoon. If I was still in I would be pulling my hair out from frustration - Gold, the bullion continued to rise while the ETF did nothing. In fact, the ETF continued to stay around a level lower than where I had sold it when Gold was selling for much less... during the same day!

Not sure what the lesson here is, but I'm searching for one!

  • Looks like I left about $10 on the table (so far), but I got out of my bear-OIL position with a small profit :) The volatility is just incredible and I see more opportunity in taking small profits than waiting on bigger swings and holding for longer periods, ...which is stressful!

    On to the next opportunity!

  • I did it... sold all my gold... at a loss. The decision, I think, was the right one. The mistake I made was buying in at so close to the 52-week high and then trying to take advantage of the intra-day swings at those highs. It's still early in the trading day, of course, and while it looks like I sold quite well (for the day), we'll see if I regret leaving any money on the table when the day is done.

Also, it's Thursday and the idea of going into the weekend on margin makes me a bit uncomfortable, so I'm glad to be holding oil using my own funds now.
