  • I doubled-down again. The moves, one day after another, are just too big and there's going to be a pull-back. As the title states: I may be an idiot, but... I have to believe something if I'm going to be trading like this and I believe that there's going to be a pull-back. As I'm writing this trade post it's holding steady at about this price, but we'll see what the afternoon holds.

When the market opened my intention was to submit a stop-loss order, really, honestly, it was... but the price just kept on dropping as I refreshed prior to submitting it and I could barely keep up with the fall. I then realized that I had probably already lost as much as I was going to lose and might as well see what happens. It did fall some more after that, but... at least for now... it's holding at about where I bought... this time around.

It's Friday, of course, and I find myself into my margin account again.

  • With my bet against Gold in late day trading yesterday I was anxious to find out how it would play out come morning. I checked in on the futures market in the evening and things appeared to be going my way with Gold falling with the pull back that I had anticipated. Well, when I woke this morning I came to learn that since about 3am the after markets were actively bidding-up Gold to new all time highs... and I was very, very deeply out of the money.

Everything that I had worked so hard to build-up in my profits from the two weeks prior was about to be wiped-out with the opening of he markets. I felt like an ass... especially since I was already patting myself on my back for such a brilliant move.

I've been watching since about 6am this morning and what a ride. As I write this I am now marginally in the money (I think), but I'm terribly nervous about what the opening price will be.

I'm not quite sure what my lesson learned from this is yet, but I'm sure that there is one and will be posting one as soon as it strikes me!

I've been watching the bid/ask on HGD while observing the futures price and I know that the pre-market bid/ask prices can be substantially off from what they will be at open, but I'm also forced to remind myself about the disconnect between the ETF and the underlying asset. Even though the futures price has come down as the morning rolled on, the bid/ask is still suggesting a significant hit to my bottom line. I guess it will be another expensive lesson day :/

  • Well, I followed my latest Lesson Learned from earlier this morning and I was greedy with my buy price for this Bear ETF and bought at just shy of the day's low (so far - with 40 minutes left in trading). Gold hit a new 52-week high today and this ETF suffered a loss of over 7% (so far) due to its leveraged short positions.

As I'm writing this trade post Gold had continued to climb and my position is now in the red, but I have to think that there's going to be a pull back tomorrow or after the weekend. Time will tell!

...and in all my excitement to get in on this ...again... I forgot to enter a stop-loss order.

  • I already got out of my gold position this morning, but I've been watching the ETF this afternoon. If I was still in I would be pulling my hair out from frustration - Gold, the bullion continued to rise while the ETF did nothing. In fact, the ETF continued to stay around a level lower than where I had sold it when Gold was selling for much less... during the same day!

Not sure what the lesson here is, but I'm searching for one!

  • Looks like I left about $10 on the table (so far), but I got out of my bear-OIL position with a small profit :) The volatility is just incredible and I see more opportunity in taking small profits than waiting on bigger swings and holding for longer periods, ...which is stressful!

    On to the next opportunity!

  • I did it... sold all my gold... at a loss. The decision, I think, was the right one. The mistake I made was buying in at so close to the 52-week high and then trying to take advantage of the intra-day swings at those highs. It's still early in the trading day, of course, and while it looks like I sold quite well (for the day), we'll see if I regret leaving any money on the table when the day is done.

Also, it's Thursday and the idea of going into the weekend on margin makes me a bit uncomfortable, so I'm glad to be holding oil using my own funds now.

  • Well, I did it... my first bet against oil. I'm still deep into Gold, but saw an opportunity... or at least what I think/thought(?) was an opportunity when Crude reached a new high at over $35. This on a day when oil inventories were reported at nearly 3 times the analyst expectations, which leads me to believe, more than ever, that oil is in for another smackdown.

Oil basically sat steady for most of the afternoon at around $34.66, give or take, and then proceeded to rally up to $34.88 before closing. I'm going to stay in after closing because I believe that tomorrow will bring some more clear thinking. Of course... this may end up hurting!

  • I saw an intra-day dip in Gold, or so I thought, and used my margin account to help leverage myself out of the hole that I found myself in with the decline in Gold since the market open. Of course... literally seconds after my order went through the bottom fell out and it just kept on heading down.

Now I'm faced with the question of what to do... do I hold and wait for the rebound, which I do still believe will occur, or do I cut my losses and look for the next opportunity somewhere else.

I'm reminded of the winner's curse.

  • TD's WebBroker software went down during the afternoon... couldn't log-in and even if I did manage to get in, it wouldn't provide any real time updates (or they took 5/10 minutes at a time!). I tried two different web browsers - no luck. Good thing that it was a light trading day, but I did see an intermediate spike in Gold prices during the outage and I had a limit sell order still in-place... a few anxious moments wondering if my trade had been executed. Finally found out at just before 3pm that it had not, though it came within $0.01 (my sell order was booked at $11.42) of having been.

Then came the many, many attempts to cancel the order, which I was finally able to do at 3:58p! I had been watching the spot price of Gold since the system outages and it had flirted with the day's highs the whole time. I was certain that I was going to finally get in and find out that it had been executed. I had already started to convince myself that whatever happened it would be for the best, but WOW, what a ride!

...of course, once the market closed... the system worked just fine :/

  • I had planned on biting the proverbial bullet and getting out of my Gold position so that I could get in on the Oil volatility play today, but missed my target price by $0.10... an admittedly wide margin, but... it wasn't entirely my fault. I used TD's price for Gold as a reference for the day, and their system wasn't updating correctly. I need to use a secondary source of data/info for commodity prices, it seems.

Goldcorp apparently revised it's production estimates WAY DOWN and surprised the market... the bad way... and I paid the price. Their stock was smacked down 10% in one day following 2 downgrades. Basically... I got really unlucky today.
